2 Ways to Start the Day

The way you start your day sets a tone that can easily snowball,
which is great if you start off on a positive note. But what about those mornings when everything goes wrong – you wake up late, Start the daystub your toe, get an annoying text message... - and the rest of day seems to go downhill. Our daily tone is like a radio signal emitting a frequency that attracts things within the same resonance to it. Like attracts like. If you want more positivity in your life, you have to own setting a positive tone regardless of what is happening around you. Most people, however, allow the tone of their day to be set by things external to them. Why not be proactive about getting your day off on a good note with these two easy practices that take less than five minutes.

Breathe

Spend a few minutes breathing.

Breathing practices are powerful tools that can lift your energy by giving you more conscious access to your nervous system, which revs up or relaxes your body. Mornings are a great time to practice energy raising yogic breathing techniques like Breath of Joy, Breath of Fire or Kapalabti. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, don’t sweat it. Keep it simple with abdominal breathing - a relaxing, but energizing breath. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Place your hands on your abdomen.
  2. Breathe deeply and slowly into your belly until you feel it expanding out into your hands.
  3. Exhale slowly, drawing your navel in towards your spine.

Appreciate

List three things you appreciate.

Whether you write your list in a gratitude journal or recite it in your head, the key is starting your day off in a state of appreciation. Why – because it feels good. Try it for a whole week and I think you’ll agree.

Feeling positive matters. Our thoughts and emotions carry a particular vibrational frequency. Think about it, the feeling of fear is very different from that of joy. In Power vs. Force, David Hawkins conducted a series of kinesiology (muscle) tests to develop a map of consciousness that calibrates the vibrational signature of emotions, perceptions and attitudes. Emotions like guilt (calibrated at 30) and anger (150) had far lower calibrations compared with higher frequency states like love (500). Hawkins suggests that higher frequencies states are more powerful and enlivening.

Taking time to appreciate in the morning tunes your radio dial higher so you have greater access to positive energies, lifts your energy, and helps you to stop sweating the small stuff that can drain so much vitality. Who doesn’t need that in the morning?
